As you well know, our women’s hockey community has faced numerous challenges over the past two years including the loss of the Fairview Arena and more recently the pre-mature end to our 2019/20 season due to COVID-19.

Yet, even through these dark times there has been a small group of committed volunteers working day and night for the betterment of female ice sports in Calgary – as a result of their perseverance we have some good news to share with you.

After the collapse of the Fairview Arena and the decision by The City of Calgary not to rebuild, the Fairview Women’s Hockey Arena Society (FWHAS) chose to re-brand as the Calgary Female Sport Development Association (CFSDA). CFSDA is a not for-profit organization committed to ensuring women, girls, and underrepresented populations have access to ice sports in Calgary.

We are excited to announce that after months of hard work and negotiations, CFSDA have been selected as the operators of the Great Plains Recreation Facility. In partnership with Benchmark Projects Limited, CFSDA will commence their five year operating contract in May 2020.

SAWHA is excited to work with CFSDA to create a vibrant hub for female hockey at the Great Plains Recreation Facility. We would like to thank all the volunteers from CFSDA for all of their effort in submitting the successful bid to operate this facility, they have set the stage for great things to come for women’s hockey in Calgary.

A representative from CFSDA will be present during the SAWHA AGM on May 6, in an effort to keep the meeting flowing we ask that you submit any questions you may have for CFSDA in advance to directors@cfsda.ca

Thank you,
SAWHA Board of Directors
