1 |
How do I get a release from my current team? |
Once your new team registers you on the HCR your old team will get a request to release through the online process.
A “Permission to Tryout” form is required for Players looking to try out for a different level of play/team but who may not necessarily be looking to leave their current team. Based on their tryout outcome then the current team is aware that a player or players could be moving from their team.
All players must be released on-line, through the new on-line registration process. This must be done by the team releasing you, before you can play with a new team. |
2 |
What’s the difference between a Non-Provincial and a Provincial Team? |
Only Provincially Registered players can participate in Provincial play-downs and playoffs.
Provincial teams pay slightly more than Non-Provincial teams to register- $90 versus $50. Each player or coach/manager registered costs $32.00 plus GST each, but Provincial team can have 4 more players registered accounting for a further $134.40 (inc GST).
At the beginning of the 2010/11Season, the Provincial teams pay $1,093.30 ($90 registration, $32.00/player to a maximum of 25 player cards and 4 coach or manager cards plus GST+$25.00 HA membership fee). Provincial teams can purchase additional coach or manager cards at $32.00/card plus GST.
Non-Provincial teams pay $917.50 ($50 registration fee, $32.00/player to a maximum of 21 players and 4 coach or managers plus GST+$25.00 HA Alberta membership fee).
At the end of the year Hockey Alberta will calculate how many players weren’t registered and refund the appropriate amount to the teams. |
3 |
How many player and certified coaches do we have to have? |
Each team must register at a minimum of 12 players and a certified coach. Maximum player number is 21 (Non-Provincially registered) or 25 (Provincially). Maximum number of coaches/managers is 4 for Non-Prov. teams. No maximum number of coaches/managers for Prov. teams, as additional cards (over the 4 provided in the initial package) can be purchased for $33.60/card. ($32+GST) |
4 |
Can we add and release players during the year and how do we do it? |
Hockey Alberta now has an on-line registration system. Teams will be allowed to input their players once Hockey Alberta opens the system for registration (mid September) and HA has received your registration check (post dated to Sept 30th is fine). If a team does not know how to register their team they should contact the registar@sawha.com for directions and contact HA for your user ID and password. Contact Michelle Skilnick mskilnick@hockeyalberta.ca. Players must be released by January 10, 2011. Players can be added up to February 10, 2011 for the 2010/2011 Season in Senior Female hockey. NO PLAYER IS ALLOWED TO PLAY FOR A TEAM UNLESS HA HAS AUTHORIZED THEM TO DO SO. This means teams registrars must be prompt with online registration and releases.
NEW ….this will be enforced by HA for 2009-10 season. Players must be registered before their first game.
Hockey Alberta Wording: “For the upcoming 2009/10 season, all Players, Coaches and Bench Staff (Official HCR record) MUST appear on the team’s roster in the HCR prior to them being eligible to participate in any on ice activities such as games and practices. For clarification, participants that are in the process of a transfer will not be eligible to play in any games or practices until they’re approved and listed on the team roster in HCR.”
See the Hockey Alberta Website www.hockeyalberta.ca, under services – registration for demos on using HCR.
Team registration sheets must be printed off and players must sign before their first game. This sheet must be faxed or scanned into the SAWHA Director of Administration before the team’s first game and before any additional players are added to play. |
5 |
How do you Affiliate Players? |
Refer to Hockey Alberta Senior Female Rep Report from the SAWHA Fall meeting- September 4, 2008 which will be posted on the SAWHA website under “Toolkit” “League Minutes/Information”. All Affiliations have to be done by January 10th of each playing season. |
6 |

I know the season has already started but I'm hoping it's not too late to join a team. Can you tell me how? |
At any point in the season, the team contacts are in the best position to tell you if they need players and what their team’s level of play is.
You should go to the contacts page, click on a team name to get complete contact information and either email or phone these contacts directly. |
8 |
How can I find a team to play on for the coming season? |
At the beginning of the season teams will post their tryouts and information about how many players they are looking for on the discussion board. You may also want to try contacting a team directly, or post and ad on the “Player Want Ads”. |
9 |
How do I know what level I should play at? |
Tier 1: Played at a University/college level recently or Midget AAA Tier 2: have played competitively-10 yrs plus, very strong skills (especially skating), Tier 3: have played competitively- 5 yrs plus, strong skills and know the rules. Tier 4- recreational level, or older players, not as competitive, must be able to skate and stick handle. |
10 |
I have just turned 18 and am no longer eligible for minor hockey. Can you tell me what my options are for playing Senior Hockey? |
All ice-time must start by10:00 pm on Sunday to Thursday nights and by 10:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. |
11 |
How do the ice costs get equalized at the end of the year? |
Players who are 18 to 20 years old have a couple of options available to them. One is to register via the Girls Hockey Calgary program for the Junior teams. The Junior Program allows those girls just coming out of the minor program, the opportunity to play with players in the same age group. Second option is for you to join a Senior women's team which can have players from 18 to 55 depending on skill levels, etc. You are not obligated to join the Girls Hockey Calgary Junior team which can be at the AA, A or B level but it is merely an option to you. If you are looking for competitive play I would suggest that you attend some AA and A tryouts.
You can access the GHCA via www.girlshockeycalgary.com and go to Registration. They have an online Registration process or contact GHCA Registrar at registrar@girlshockeycalgary.com for more information re the Junior Girls teams. During the 2009/2010 season GHC did not have Jr. team but they are trying to re-start this program.
The Junior teams get ice from Minor Hockey Calgary at the minor program rate vs. the Adult (anything over 18) rate. The Junior teams usually have more practices. |
12 |
If a player is 17 now and would like to play but doesn't turn 18 until say November, can she still play beginning in October? |
All players, that played with a team registered with any CHA Branch Hockey Association including Hockey Alberta, in the previous season, and wants to play with a SAWHA team, must obtain either a practice or full release from their prior team, before trying out, practicing or playing with another SAWHA team. It is a serious offence to allow a player to practice or play without a release.
Any player who turns 18 on or before December 31st of this year is considered to be ineligible for any minor hockey team (under 18) and would move directly to a Senior level team (18+ years).
The player can attend tryouts for any Senior team or register directly with a Senior team. Proof of age may be requested by SAWHA to confirm that the player will turn 18 by December 31st.This would also help to eliminate any problems with a Minor Hockey Association with the 'age issue' and to avoid any misunderstanding regarding the player's registration with a Senior league.
For Affiliation purposes, you may affiliate players from your local Minor Hockey Association from the Bantam/Midget levels. Approval must be made with the Minor Hockey Association President and Zone Director in your area and will also need to be approved by Hockey Alberta. You can affiliate on a Team to Team basis meaning that one whole Midget team of 19 players can be affiliated to your team or on a Player to Player basis where a maximum of 19 named players from different Bantam/Midget teams from your LMHA can be listed to your team. |
13 |
What does a new team have to do to be considered becoming part of the SAWHA league? |
New Teams must provide an expression of interest in writing to the SAWHA President by June 1 of the playing season expressing the following:
- Compliance with and adherence to the Objectives, Bylaws and Operating Rules of SAWHA.
- Acknowledgement that it is required to provide volunteers for Casinos and other League events such as Provincials, League meeting attendance, etc.
- A complete list of the names, mailing and e-mail addresses, phone and fax numbers of the applicant’s officers, which shall consist of at least a coach and team manager
- Annual membership fee deposit ($250), as specified in the Operating Rules, refundable if the team withdraws prior to August 15 of the playing season.
A written application must be received by the SAWHA President, due August 1 of the playing season, which shall include the following:
- The Expression of Interest Listed above.
- A copy of an ice rental contract that indicates that the team has 15 to 20 ice slots per season. All ice-times must start no later than 10:00 pm on Sunday to Thursday nights and no later than 10:30 pm on Friday and Saturday nights.
- If the arena is out of town, it must be within a 90 km radius of Calgary
- A roster with players’ names and how long they have played at what level (this is to help determine what tier, that they have enough players and that we know if some of their players are coming from other teams)
- If a team is unable to secure an ice rental contract they must provide proof that
they have contacted at least five (5) arenas, and have been turned down but are hopefully on a wait list. This proof must be sent to board@sawha.com.
All new teams must be approved by SAWHA executive, prior to the start of the season. |
| Cancelling Games / Forfeiting |
NBR |
QUESTIONS |
ANSWERS |
14 |
What if we have to cancel a game due to weather conditions? |
Games shall be cancelled if the local RCMP or other recognized road association issues a No Travel Advisory. This information is available via the Alberta Motor Association website. In the event that a game is cancelled due to the “No Travel Advisory”, the Home team is responsible for the cost of the ice. The cost of the makeup ice will be shared between the 2 teams. The SAWHA Scheduler and President should both be notified and this should be done by the visiting team(the traveling team) |
15 |
Who has to notify the Scheduler and President if a game is cancelled due to weather conditions? |
The visiting team has to notify the Scheduler, so that she notifies the ref assignor to cancel the referees.
If the referees are not cancelled in time, due to no fault of the teams, SAWHA will pay the referee cost. The Scheduler will work with the teams to find suitable replacement ice and no cancellation fee will be levied. |
16 |
What if the ice is not available and a game has to be cancelled? |
If the ice is not available due to physical problems with the ice or scheduling errors, the home team is responsible to notify the other team, and the SAWHA Scheduler (who will notify the Referee Assignor) ASAP.
If the referees are not cancelled in time, due to no fault of the teams, SAWHA will pay the referee cost. The Director – Scheduling and Officiating will work with the teams to find suitable replacement ice and no cancellation fee will be levied. |
17 |
What if our team needs to Cancel a game and wants to Reschedule it? |
To cancel a game you must notify the Scheduler and the President with a minimum of 14 days notice. If the cancellation occurs with between 7 and 14 days notice, the cancelling team must pay a $100 fine. If the cancellation occurs with less than 7 days notice the cancelling team must pay a $100 fine, plus the cost of the ice, referees and any administration costs (if applicable).
It is the cancelling team’s responsibility to find suitable replacement ice for the make up game. Teams that submit requests for changes to the schedule are responsible to provide to the SAWHA Scheduler alternative ice times, which all teams affected agree with, and if the SAWHA Scheduler agrees, and refs can be rescheduled, then the game will be rescheduled.
All previously cancelled league games are to have a rescheduled game worked out within fourteen (14) days of the scheduled game date and the game must be played out within five (5) days after the end of the League Schedule. If a game is not rescheduled within these time frames, the cancelling team will automatically be assessed with a loss and will be fined another $250. |
18 |
What if our team forfeits a game- i.e. shows up with less than 6 players? |
Your team will be fined $450 plus the cost of the ice, referees and any administration costs (if applicable). The game will not be rescheduled. |
| Coaching |
NBR |
QUESTIONS |
ANSWERS |
19 |
What’s the minimum number of Coaches that we must have? |
Each team must have a least one certified coach registered with the Team and on the bench for all games. All coaches must have completed the Coach Level Certification in the National Coaching Certification Program by December 31st of the hockey season. This certification never expires and costs approximately $110, see dates and times posted on the SAWHA website.
The person labeled as “Coach” on the score sheet must be registered as a Team Official (Coach) on the HCR. Female players can not “Coach” and play within the same game. |
20 |
Are there other courses, besides Coaching courses that our team must take? |
Each team must have a registered coach or player, on the bench, who has completed (and has not expired) the following courses:
Hockey Canada Safety Program by December 31 of the current Hockey Season- this course is valid for a period of 3 hockey seasons from the date of the clinic attended to August 1 of the third hockey season. The course costs approximately $110 and the re-certification fee is $50. By sending in a copy of a valid Standard First Aid / CPR course to Hockey Alberta, a person can be certified at Safety Level 2 which extends their expiration to 6 years as long as their First Aid remains current.
Speak Out by December 31 of the current Hockey Season. This certification does not expire once taken and costs approximately $50. This course is now also incorporated into the NCCP Coach Course. |
21 |
Will SAWHA reimburse us for the cost of course fees? |
If the SAWHA annual budget provides for course reimbursement, SAWHA will reimburse each team for ½ the cost of courses required by the league (i.e. Coach Level, Hockey Canada Safety Program and Speak Out). Copies of receipts must be submitted to the SAWHA Treasurer. Please combine receipts, as only one check will be issued per team per year for a maximum of 2 coaches only per team. |
22 |
Am I allowed to play in one tier and coach in another? Is there any conflict when our tiers play each other? |
There is no rule or conflict of interest as such for your situation. You can coach or be on the bench for any number of teams. You will have to be on the game sheet and registered to those teams as either a coach for one team or a player for the other. We are grateful that players are taking an active "coaching” interest with the teams. |
Referees |
NBR |
QUESTIONS |
ANSWERS |
23 |
How do I arrange to have referees for an exhibition game? |
Send your request with date, time and arena to scheduler@sawha.com .
All exhibition games must be authorized through the HA Senior Female Rep. All resulting discipline will be dealt with through HA Senior Female Rep. All exhibition game sheets must be sent to HA Senior Female Rep.
You must have a Hockey Alberta certified ref or in the event of an injury you will not have medical insurance coverage
Note that these games are "cash games" so the refs have to be paid by the teams playing. |
24 |
Do we have Referees at all Calgary games? |
Hockey Alberta and SAWHA attempt to have 2 Hockey Alberta certified referees at every game. If only one referee shows up, the game must be played.
In the case of officials not showing up for regular season games, see CHA rule 5.2K of the CHA Official Playing Rules. SAWHA recommends that a player that is most familiar with the HA rules (i.e. the Captain, Assistant Captain, or a player that is or has been a certified referee) be chosen to be the substitute referee. If one of the teams wants to play the game with substitute referees, and the other team does not the game will be recorded as a win for the team willing to play and loss for the other team-1-0. The forfeit penalty will not be invoked. If the teams agree to not play, they must also agree which team will use the ice and pay for it (i.e. recorded as a practice). This assumes that a new game can be rescheduled. If a new game cannot be rescheduled the game will be deemed to have been a 0-0 tie and the game will be recorded as if the game was played. |
25 |
Do we have Referees at all outside of Calgary games? |
It is the responsibility of the teams whose home ice is outside of Calgary to arrange for refs, with their local referee association, for all their home games.
SAWHA will either pay the referees directly, during the season, or reimburse the team at the end of the season, (assuming the team volunteered at the Casino).
The preferred method of payment should be arranged with the Treasurer prior to the start of the season and all bills should be submitted to the Treasurer. |
26 |
Where can I get a referee Evaluation forms? |
Refer to Referee Evaluation Form under the TOOLKIT menu on the SAWHA website for information We encourage teams to provide feedback on both good and bad referees. There is also a short form Referee evaluation which can be found upon entering game stats. Both visitor and home team can fill them out. |

NBR |
QUESTIONS |
ANSWERS |
27 |
The schedule has us playing at home on a date our ice is not available. Who should I tell? |
Each team must secure 15-18 ice slots (1 hr & 15 minutes duration), in total, between October 1st and December 24th -the “First Half of the Season” and between January 2nd and March 23rd- the “Second Half of the Season”. Copies of the Contracts must be submitted to the Scheduler by August 15 for the First Half of the Season and by December 1 for the second Half of the Season.
If a new team is unable to secure an ice rental contract they must provide proof that
they have contacted at least five (5) arenas, and have been turned down but are hopefully on a wait list. This proof must be sent to board@sawha.com |
28 |
What is the latest time a game can start? |
All ice-time must start by10:00 pm on Sunday to Thursday nights and by 10:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. Some existing teams have ice time later than that and they have been grandfathered. |
29 |
How do the ice costs get equalized at the end of the year? |
Each team is responsible to pay or supply for ½ of the games that play games on and pay or supply for the whole ice cost of any practices. The Ice equalization calculation is done by the Treasurer at the end of the year and is outlined below.
Ice Equalization process - this calculation and invoices are prepared by the SAWHA Treasurer at the end of the season. For example:
If a team plays 30 games, they are responsible to pay or supply for ½ of the ice times or 15 ice times.
-So if, for example, 16 of the team’s ice slots are used for SAWHA games, the teams will be reimbursed the actual cost of the 1 excess ice slot.
- Or if, for example, only 14 of the team’s ice slots are used for SAWHA games then the team will owe the league for 1 full ice time, based on the average cost of ice paid by SAWHA to teams that over submitted. (This is deemed to be the fairest method, as teams have little control of where they play and thus the average cost of all extra ice used is deemed fairer)
Any ice, which SAWHA does not schedule games on, is turned back to the team for them to use the ice for practices or sell. You must let the Scheduler know that you have returned any unused ice(make-up games may be scheduled on an ice no longer under contract, we don’t want this to happen) |
30 |
How does our team request to not play on a particular day(s)- “Request for Blackout” |
All requests to not play on certain days (“Blackouts”) must be entered into the SAWHA website on the same screens that you update your team contact information, no later than August 15 for the period of September 1- January 31 and by December 1 for the period of February 1–March 31. |
